Universitat Pompeu Fabra  - UPF MBA programme Barcelona, Spain

Message from the Director of the UPF MBA programme

An MBA programme can be an expensive investment and thus it is important that you choose the programme that is right for you.
The philosophy behind the programme at UPF is simple to state.  We aim to furnish students with a rigorous intellectual training that will stand them in good stead for many years to come.  This means, therefore, that – in the classroom – we concentrate on teaching the “basics” well because failure to do so will not provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make an impact in the future.  The programme offers students many opportunities to develop their portfolios of action-oriented managerial skills that, once they graduate, can be further developed as they progress in their future managerial careers.  Learning to learn from experience is an important goal of the UPF MBA programme.
Our programme at UPF goes against a major trend in MBA education today - this is to demand several years of work experience as a prerequisite for admission. We believe that this requirement prevents many qualified candidates from benefiting from studying at a time that suits their individual needs. Thus, do not let a lack of work experience deter you from considering the MBA at UPF.
The MBA at UPF is a new and exciting venture in international management education. I invite you to explore its possibilities and, perhaps, share our excitement as you work within a multicultural environment in Barcelona to gain the knowledge and skills that will be needed to achieve your managerial ambitions.

Professor and Director of the UPF MBA programme
Former Deputy Dean at the University of Chicago

School and Programme Description

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) was founded in June of 1990. This new public university is meeting the challenge to improve the overall quality of higher education through its emphasis on excellence in teaching and research, and through its firm commitment to international cooperation as evidenced by exchanges of scholars and students.
The Department of Economics and Business at UPF has earned a solid reputation through its policy of attracting internationally renowned scholars and by carefully selecting students.  It is now one of the leading departments of economics in Europe. A high percentage of its faculty come from a wide variety of countries and hold degrees from top U.S. and European universities.  In addition to undergraduate programmes, the department offers a Graduate Programme in Economics and Management (GPEM).  More than 85% of the GPEM students are international; they represent over 30 countries worldwide. In September 2002, the department will inaugurate its two-year, full-time MBA programme.  The UPF MBA programme targets strong internationally-minded students who want to make an impact in the world of business.
At UPF, the essential ingredients for an MBA programme are held to be (a) academic excellence, and (b) practical relevance.  The former implies rigorous and demanding courses taught by highly qualified professors. The latter requires opportunities to see the links between theory and practice and to acquire skills that facilitate communication, teamwork, and the ability to learn the right lessons from experience.  In consequence, the UPF MBA programme is designed to provide students with:
-An ideal context for academic rigour and intellectual challenges
-Links between theory and practice
-A multicultural environment
-Opportunities to develop personal “action skills” that are highly valued by employers (e.g. the ability to communicate effectively, think on one’s feet, and work in teams towards a common goal)

Structure of The UPF MBA programme

-Full-time over 2 academic years
-Summer internship between the 1st and 2nd years
-20 courses including an application project in the 1st year, and 6 electives in  the 2nd year
-International student body and faculty
-Taught in English
